The Elisha Blackman Building, also known as York-Chapel Building, wasbuilt in 1883. It occupies a corner of York and Chapel Streets in theDowntown New Haven neighborhood of New Haven, Connecticut. It is afour story commercial building whose "brick and stone work that isfirst rate".:4 The building was listed on the National Register ofHistoric Places in 1978.[1] The building was an investment by ElishaBlackman, a carriage maker. It is "quite possible" that neighbors, onwhat were nice residential-only streets, were displeased by thedevelopment of this multi-storey building with commercial space on itsfirst floor and apartments above.[2]
The design, by an unknown architect, and the workmanship of thebuilding is quite fine. The brick and stone is arranged intopilasters, corbelling and string courses. It has a metal cladcornice.[2] There was a fire in the building in 1977 and the buildingwas vacated. At the time of the NRHP application there wererehabilitation plans.[2]
