From the Springer paper: "We learn from the San Marcial Bee thatthe next social event there will be the marriage of W. D. Hitchcock toMiss Ella Roseberry, about the 1st of September. Miss Ella was at onetime a resident of Springer and she still retains many friends hereall of whom hope she may do well in her choice of a life partner." Married At the residence of Bryant Rhea, on Tuesday evening, the1st inst., Miss Ella Roseberry and Wm. Hitchcock of San Marcial wereunited in marriage. Rev. J. W. Sinnock performed the ceremony. Thegroom's parents from San Marcial were present. The bride is a sisterof Mrs. Rhea, with whom she was spending the summer. -- Raton Range. The young couple are general favorites in local society circles, andthis outcome of their social companionship is a pleasing conclusion totheir many friends. Sincere congratulations are offered. Around1902 when William was promoted to Round House Foreman at Raton, ColfaxCo., the following was written for him: BILL HITCHCOCK'S PARDON,or THE TRIBULATIONS OF A ROUND HOUSE FOREMAN William D.Hitchcock ('course the name is fictitious) Is a man who was never atall superstitious. But a dream which he had is direct intimationOf his faith in this doctrine of predestination. Now the saidWilliam Hitchcock, please bear in your mind, Is a bright Round HouseForeman, who, like all of his kind, Has trials and troubles too manyto state - And with this introduction, his dream I'll relate. Aspirit appeared at his bedside one night Decked out in a garment ofpure spotless white, And thus addressed Bill - "To me has been given Command from the Recording Angel in Heaven, To ascertain why 'tisyour name should appear On the Great Book of Life, as the reason'snot clear. The profanity record has been kept for ages, Butnothing like yours appears on its pages. Therefore 'tis decided, unless you can show Just cause for defense, to send you below. Here the fire is unquenched, and those who have never Repented, areroasted forever and forever." On hearing the latter, Bill triedhard to smile And invited the Spirit to tarry a while. "If I failto make my defence in full measure," He said, "I'll be roasted withgreatest of pleasure. Please remain here tomorrow, accompany me,And report to Head-quarters whatever you see." The spirit agreed,I am happy to say, And took note of what happened the following day. First, a conceited young clerk, with expression Satanic, Brought abundle of letters from the Master Mechanic, And here a few extractsI give as example, Of the bunch that the spirit took away for asample. "Please note that the Superintendent complains You areusing poor coal on our passenger trains". "Please let me know whatexcuse you can make, Why so many new compound packing rings break". "Engine failures, last year, for the month were but seven, I regretfor the same time this year there's eleven." "You must take up thematter and ascertain why We used so much oil in the month of July. You are surely aware that a half pint to use Of valve oil perhundred is simply abuse. I believe 'tould be wise, (at least we cantry it) To give engineers feathers with which to apply it." "ThePresident's Special is leaving today, At 10:25, there must be nodelay." (missing part of the poem) Rite Main pin out and runshotter than --- (it should) All the rod bushings are loose on bothsides, Set up the wedges and line up the guides. The air pumpjerks on the upward streak. Examine and see if the valve haintbroke. Take down the left main rod, reduce the brass, And don'tfail to put in a water glass. Raze the front end an inch or more,And fix the ketch on the fire-box door, I think from the way sheburns her fire, Her petticoat should be a little hire." Beforethe Good Spirit got through taking notes From the book containingthe work reports, From the Chief Despatcher came a message whichread, "The Golden Gate Special's engine is dead. Send another atonce to take the train, Why you sent this one on 21, pleaseexplain." Then the hostler announced that a broken switch Hadcaused him to put engine 12 in the ditch. The Spirit departed, buton the same night Returned with a crown, and in greatest delightPresented to Bill's most astonished vision, A test of the RecordingAngel's decision. And a list of the greatest hero saints allrevealed, With William D. Hitchcock's name leading the field!Dec. 1, 1917: "W. D.
