A report from the Board of Trade, who published, amongst other things,the annual report on railway accidents lists the accident on October4, 1850 and a short paragraph which reads: "Mr. Hatchwell and Mr.Wolton, stationmasters at Bury St. Edmonds and Thurston, riding on theroof of a carriage, were knocked off, by coming in contact with abridge, and instantly killed."
Uncle Will Sharp said of his visit in 1888:
Mother's father, Gideon Hatchwell, had a hobby of fishing. He wentafter it knowingly, one might say scientifically. He studied theflies, made his own. So famous did his collections become thatexperts visited
him from all parts of the kingdom and he was given free use of allwaters of the county. He painted too. For
years there was an oil painting around our home - her father's work,according to mother. I have dim
recollection of a pictured castle seen by moonlight. To my child mindit spoke of loneliness.
