Parish records show his as 3rd son of Rev. James Neale and Mary Ayers. Family notes show him being born at 7am at Henley 2/8/1754. He wasbaptised 3/5/1754, parish of Henley St. Mary. John attended WorcesterCollege, University of Oxford. He matriculated 12/15/1775 age 20.Ordained deacon in St. George Church, Bloomsbury, London by the Bishopof Litchfield and Coventry 5/25/1777. John ordained priest 9/23/1891in Exeter by the Bishop of Exeter. Family notes show he wasinstituted as rector of St. Mary-le-Port, Bristol on 2/2/1782 andserved as rector there for 59 years. Bristol records show he wasthere during the period of 1792-1841. In 1784 the Bishop noted therector as being a non-resident. In 1822, Bishop noted John Nealestill rector (Bishop Secker's Diocese Book BSR, xxxvii, p. 40).
John held the position of trustee for John Blagdon from 1790-1835.John Blagdon was the brother of Anne, his wife. Her brother had beendeclared a lunatic in 1790 and his brother Edward Blagdon and hisbrother-in-law had been appointed as trustees to administer hisconsiderable estates in Boddington and the surrounding area. Theyprovided him with an allowance, which was increased over the years,and he lived in Boddington Manor with Rev. Neale and his family whosupervised his care. By 1811 Edward Blagdon died leaving 3 children,all of whom were under 21 years old and this left Rev. John Neale insole control of the administration of John Blagdon's estates. Two ofEdward Blagdon's children, John and Anne, married two of Rev. JohnNeale's children and the third of Edward Blagdon's children diedunmarried. By the early 1830's, John Balgdon (Edward Blagdon's son)began to question his father-in-law's administration of John Blagdon's(the lunatic) estate and charges of mismanagement were made. JohnBlagdon was successful and took over responsiblity for the estate in1835. He succeeded his uncle as Lord of the Manor in 1840 and died in1853. His trustees gradually sold off the estate over the next 20years. Rev. John Neale's dates of residency at Boddington areunknown, however, son Charles and daughter Clara were born there.Rev. Neale and his family retained strong links with Boddington after1835 but lived in a house in Cheltenham.
