Schooling at Bethel began with Nathaniel Hudson M.D. He built aschoolhouse on his claim and conducted classes there during the latespring and summer of 1852. It was named Bethel Academy, later to bemerged with Monmouth College. Dr, Nathaniel came west via the PanamaCanal in 1850. He delivered his granddaughter, Leila Hudson. His wifeCordelia Sammis was born in 1820. She sailed around the Horn in 1851.

According to son JN Hudson, he came to San Francisco around the Hornaboard a sailing vessel in 1850 and practiced his profession asphysician there until the fall of 1851, when he came to Oregon. Hegraduated at Amherst College becoming president of the University ofthe City of NY. After a year he went to Paris, France where he securedhis degree as a doctor of medicine. He put in some time in the Parishospitals. He was in Paris during the revolution of 1848. Appointedphysician to the Grand Ronde and Silletz Indian agnecies and servedthere until 1866. Taught at Monmouth from 1866-1967, then moved toSalem, OR where he practiced as a doctor. Taught school at Bethel andin 1873 he and his wife Lydia were teachers at Jefferson Instituted atJefferson. After losing their property, they moved to Turner inEastern Oregon where they moved in with his wife's daughter, Mrs. MaryPhilbrick. He died at Baker City in 1902.
