"Captain JJN Webber was 3 years of age when he made his first voyageto Havre, France. When he arrived at NY from a 3 years' voyage toeastern countries he was 9 years of age. The missionaries in Chinasaid he was the youngest American boy who had been to China up to thattime. He was 17 years of age and chief officer of the brig Eagle,which carried 90 persons in officers and crew. She was an opiumsmuggler fitten up like a man of war to capture or destroy Chinese andMalay pirates. He owned and commanded a ship when 21 years of age.He followed the sea 46 years and was born in Brooklyn, NY on August18, 1825 and lived to the age of 81. He owned a large family Bibleand never took it to sea. He was an officer on board the USS Monitorwhen she defeated the Merrimac. It was written in Captain Cook'sjournals it was a rough passage going from NY to Hampton Roads, afierce fight and though the Merrimac had ten guns and the Monitor two,she was victor and saved one country from being rent in twain."
Was Navy master on board the Monitor during the Civil War - "in chargeof the powder division on the battle station berth deck. Died in theSailor's Sung Harbor Hospital, Brooklyn, NY, where he lived for 15years. Buried in the Snug Harbor Cemetery, plot 10, grave 2794, page2744 - daughter Mrs. Emma L. Lazarus, son AE Webber. Living inBrooklyn, NY in 1870, listed as seaman with wife Nancy, childrenBenjamin, Emma, Albert, Edward, Ada and brother? Edward, 27 policeman,all born NY.
