Henry Hatchwell

'Recollection of Old Taunton', by Edward Goldsworthy: 'The arrival anddeparture of the North Devon and Bridport Mails, and other coaches,was the great event of the day. The coachmen and guards were men ofgreat importance, and also great drinkers. The corner of Paul Streetwas not so wide as at present; it was just as much trouble to getBrices's eight horse wagons round the corner as to get a menagerie ofwild beasts into Castle Green. The coaches running through Taunton,were the North Devon, the Bridport Mail, Velocity, Tam O'Shanter,Exquisite, Nonpareil and others. Old Clarke, who kept the Old AngelInn, had driven the Judges to Church and to the old Assize Courts fortwenty years; when unable to do so any longer, he was succeeded byHarry Hatchwell, as fine a fellow as ever adorned a judges'shammer-cloth.' Henry Hatchwell is also mentioned with regard to theoriginal Taunton Race Course which was situated in the North Towndistrict of Taunton: 'Harry Hatchwell (the clerk of the course) rodeup and down, smacking his whip as if the race depended entirely onthe amount of noise he made''.
