The Most Unforgettable Character I Have Met “
The following are excerpts written around 1947 by Dr. H. B. [Bert]Sharp to be submitted to The ReadersÂ’ Digest.
Father was tall, dignified, almost majestic at times and presided overour large family like a patriarch of old. I never heard him utter animpatient word to mother and he never lost his temper in dealing withus children. had a way of getting at the core of issues andexpressing himself more clearly than anyone I have ever met.
Father had a keen sense of humorÂ… [could take it as well as dish itout.] an inveterate smoker. He withdrew from cigar smoking for thesake of his boys as he couldn't very tell them not to do exactly whathe was doing.
Father was always champion of the underdog. When riding with him onceon the train I saw a little woman lean forward toward a tall, heavyset, prosperous looking foreigner in front of her and ask if hewould mind closing his window, as the cold air might bring on a returnof pneumonia from which she had recently recovered. The man looked ather disdainfully and, leaving the window open, remarked, ‘YouAmericans are mighty weak people.’Father walked across the aisle, stretched his long arm firmly in front of the man, closed the windowwith a bang then, looking him squarely in the eye remarked, ‘Not allweak, brother; let it stay down!’ And it remained closed. My boy, yousee the tests of character are to make us, not break us.”
Father's business took him away from home a great deal. …Love of wifeand children was deep and loyal. He had a specially-made leatherphotograph holder which he swung open on his dresser as soon as heentered a hotel room when away from home. It reached clear across thedresser and contained pictures of his baker's dozen as he called hisfamily. ‘I want them always with me.’
When he was on such trips dear little MotherÂ…would not take time outfor punishing us when we needed it, simply made each of us write hisown briefÂ’of the sad incidents, to be passed on to Father.Occasionally the rod was administered, though more often it wastalk;Â…he would sit for minutes silently searching our face with thosepenetrating eyes of his, seeming to look into our very soul; seeingbeyond the particular offence and yearning to to get at the why of ourcussedness. Spiritual hotbaths were occasions of growth andstock-taking as he made us see.
He asked mother to also make a list of the occasions deserving ofcommendation; and how thrilled we were to draw such praises as ‘Oldstandby’, ‘Righthand Man’, Old Faithful’, or ‘My Partner’.
At family prayers how impressive it was when he talked so familiarlywith his God who seemed to be right there in the room with us. Hetook up all the family problems in those talks with God and we eachcame to feel our personal responsibility in making the home runsmoothly as we gained knowledge of the burdens he and Mother had tocarry. It bound us together as a spiritual team.
Father's philosophy of life was epitomized in the final stanza of hislast poem (describing ‘Mount Baldy, the snowcapped peak of SouthernCalifornia's Sierra Madre mountains.) "Earthly riches will all beforgotten. Kind acts are the only true gain. E'en you, Old Baldy, will vanish, And love, alone, will remain."’
He is yesterday; part of a vanished generation who built a firmfoundation for America. His soul goes marching on.”

Perhaps it was the fact that his father enjoyed a cigar that Will tookup and kept up smoking, much to his brother'sÂ’distress.
