Grandchildren called him "Pop." Grew up in Columbus, Georgia, but after leaving never went home again. Saved money for 3 years to start a company with no advice from anyone. Inherited some money and bought land and built buildings off Jefferson for the West Coast warehouse. Depression required selling the buildings and became a salesman. 1934 started EJB Company after getting back on his feet. Offices off Beverly in Beverly Hills, then City of Commerce.

Emerson changed his last name spelling from Brooks to Brookes. Emerson married Grace Hitchcock and they were the parents of one son: Robert J. Brookes
Emerson was a metal broker. He died on February 21, 1979 in Los Angeles, California and was buried there.
