Thisis a letter written in 1892 by Daniel William Hitchcock Sr. to hisgranddaughter, Nellie Parrish. Daniel was 70 years old when this waswritten and had not seen Nellie since she was a child before thefamily came to America. St. James Place Plumstead,England 8 April, 1892 Woolwich My DearGranddaughter Parrish I first of all desire to wish you many happyreturns on your Birthday and to which I now find, has been added yournext important day, even the day you have become a wife, which I trustwill be owned and blest by the God of Heaven and that you many indeedbe mutual Help Meets the one to the other - and that you may be so ledby Him who never errs or makes a mistake, to find your sole happinessand comfort on earth in God's Blessing and each other's Society andthat as Years, Days and Months pass by, your Affections and Love foreach other may increase and multiply. It is now 46 years the 15th ofthis month since your Dear Grandmother and I joined our fortunestogether for better or for worse, and by God's blessing I can say thatas we grew older and remained longer together, our love for each otherseemed to strengthen and I know that had she been spared to have heardof her first Granddaughter having become a wife, her prayers wouldhave joined heartily and sincerely with mine, that our Father, ourGod, our Guide, Director, Protector, Comforter and above all , ourRedeemer would Bless the dear girl and make her a faithful, loving andaffectionate wife, and if God will, a mother. But now I am alone, but I wish you and your dear Partner in Life all New CovenantBlessings and that Joy and Peace may attend your every step. Now asto advice as to how to manage a Husband, I suppose that is a secretmost purely known to the wife, but what I have gathered whilst walkingalong, it seems to me to be centered in this - let him think he alwayshas his way, and the wife always has hers - and her good sense willalways keep her from boasting of it and then she can enjoy it with himand it soothes the Pathway of Life - and never, no never, forget, mydear Nellie, his cares are your cares, his Joys are your Joys, andthat you may each and both be led and kept to commit your ways, eachof you and togethe run to Him, who in his Wisdom, appointed themarriage state, and who, above all, has promised in so doing to directyour path, and which direction you will find laid down in the UnerringStandard of Divine Truth, even the Precious Word of God. Well now, having said this much, I must now, I think, say a little somethingabout your changing the time of the Event, which when you firstbroached the subject to me, was to be in September, but September camein February so that prevents me from saying, as your dear mother oftensays about her letters to me - It's better late than never. But, Isuppose you both (who principle in the matter) thought that the soonerthe better - I think so, too. Now, as I was not privileged to be atthe wedding, therefore could not see what the presents consist of -and I might have sent you something of which you have a good supply -your Uncle John and I talked matters over and we thought you wouldknow what would be best and most needful. We have therefor sent youcash and herewith I trust you will find the sum of 20#, with which youwill buy something you require at the moment, and now give my love toyour Dear Husband and tell him when I greet with a wish, it is alsofor him and one of my Comforts, while I am permitted to sojourn herewill be oftimes to hear from you and of your continued Happiness andProsperity.
