First man married (to Clara Morgan) in new town of Fairmont, Nebraska, having come there in a covered wagon pulled by oxen from Massachusettswith his family. Quite a short man and very stocky, especially in hislater years, but a fine looking gentleman. Carried a cane and alwaysstood very straight and exuded dignity. Was reportedly a vigilanteduring the outlaw days in the west and purportedly brought cattle overthe plains. Was a partner in Cripple Creek Mine in New Mexico and gotcheated out of a fortune by his partner. Was always anentrepreneurial type of man, investing in gold mines and riskyventures. He had a very strong personality and dogmatic convictionsabout politics and many issues. His wife transcribed many storiesthat were published about these subjects. He was a member of theNebraska State Legislature in 1883. His wife, Clara, was an extremelystrong personality as well, fighting for women's rights andtemperance. Their union must have been a powerful one, with verylittle room for compromise. One wonders how a man of that era dealtwith a woman of such strong conviction, but their marriage endured it.
