Charles was born in Ohio to Cristopher and Rachel Walker in about1847. Nothing is known about his early life except that it must havebeen difficult because his mother died before he was 13 years old. Atabout that time the family moved to Logansport, Indiana, and lettersreveal that the father, Christopher had a difficult time getting ajob, but eventually secured one on the railroad. But, somehow Charlesmust have received a good education because he appears to have heldresponsible posititions in coal mining and later as a supervisor ofmanager at a tile factory. In a newpaper article written at the timeof his wife Jenny's death it mentions that they lived in Clinton, IN.,for 25 years before moving about 10 miles away to Mecca, IN., wherethe tile plant was located. While in Mecca Charles assumed charge ofthe Dee Clay Plant/Clay City Pipe Plant in which he was also astockholder. The remained there for 25 years.
While in Clinton 1880 and 1900 census documents indicate he was a"coal operator". What that means is anyone's guess, but the familystory is that he was a manager and his daughter Geneva worked for hima secretary when she met Charles Emmett Hughes. However, aftervisiting Clinton in 2007 and determining the location of both familiesresidences, they probably met because they lived about two blocks fromeach other on the Fifth Street.
Charles wife died in 1927 but no information has ever been foundregard his life after her death or where he is buried.
Family members indicate that they lived in Maywood,Chicago, at onetime. When his wife Jenny died she was living with her daughter, JennyCutler, in Maywood, Ill., which is just outside Chicago.
Charles lost his only son Charles because of an automobile accident inChicago when he was in his 20's. One daughter, Antionette became anaccomplished actress and lived in New York city most her adult life.

THE PUBLIC FORUM WHY IS SUNDAY? In your issue of the 2d, referring toSunday closing of saloons, it occurs to me if the orthodox clergymenand reformers would study the scriptures they will find that they havenothing to stand upon. Prom Genesis to Revelations the bible does notstate anything about Sunday, the first day in the week. MostChristians have the idea because Christ rose on that day and manyministers succeed in deluding the people by calling it the Lord's day.But the bible does say: "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy."This was handed to Moses on Mt. Sinai and is commanded to be keptuntil the end of time. (Exodus, 31st chap., 16th to 17th verses.) Andthere is not a minister, Protestant or Catholic, can prove from thebible where God ever ordained it. (Exodus, 20th chapter, 8th to 11thverses; 111th Psalm, 7th and 8th verses; Roman, 3d chapter, 31stverse; Matthew, 5th chapter, 17th verse; Ezekial, 22d chapter, 26thverse; Luke, 4th chapter, 16th to 31st verses; Acts,
18th chater, 4th, 13th and 42d verses.) The Sunday closing advocatesseem to delight in persecuting the saloonkeeper, whose business isjust as legal as a doctor lawyer, minister or priest. The people whowill be affected by the Sunday closing should test the validity of theSunday laws, and I believe should the matter be put
clearly before the courts that they will find relief. Charles P.Walker.
