Biographical Notes: Asa Chapman was the son of Phineas and Mary(Hillier) Chapman. He studied for college with Rev. Frederick W.Hotchkiss of Saybrook, CT. After graduating from Yale, Chapman taughtbriefly at the academy of North Salem as well as in Norwalk, CT. Hecontinued teaching while attending the Litchfield Law School. Afterbeing admitted to the bar, he established a law practice in Newtown,CT. He married and he and his wife had four children. In 1824, Chapmanmoved his family to New Haven, CT and briefly opened a law schoolwhich he had to abandon for health reasons. He died of consumption atthe age of fifty-six.
