Grew up on his father's farm and when a small boy drove oxen daily toMorris Cove to get white fish caught in seines, to use for fertilizer.Until his son was 15 he conducted a dairy farm. Then he established abusiness in which he remained for years. He built several largereservoirs and the first crushed stone highway in Branford, a sectionof the Boston Post Road. He invented the first tripod device used onwagons for hoisting poles and when teh East Haven reservoir was built,he contrived the windlass operated between two horses to drawmaterials up the steep grade. For many years he was a member of theNew Haven Horse Guards. He attended the Old Stone Church.
