Promoted to Full 3rd Lieutenant on 21 Apr 1862.
Promoted to Full 1st Sergeant on 01 Feb 1862.
Promoted to Full 1st Lieutenant on 03 Jun 1863.
Promoted to Full Captain on 11 Dec 1863.
He was wounded in the shoulder at Cedar Run, VA. on 9 Aug. 1862.Wounded again on 3 May 1863 at Chancellorsville, VA.
Taken as POW on 22 Sept. 1864 at Fishers Hill, VA. and confined atHarpers Ferry, WV. Then arrived at Fort Delaware, DE. on 27 Sept.1864. He took Oath of Allegiance on 17 June 1865 and was sent toDanville, VA.

After many conferences between the Virginia and North Carolinacommissioners the Roanoke Navigation Company was formed by Act of theGeneral Assembly of Virginia in December 1804, for the navigation ofthe Roanoke River and the tributaries. In order to raise $100,000 tocarry out the project, shares in the company were offered for sale,and the committee named by the Assembly to sell and receive moneys forthe company in Pittsylvania County were Nathaniel Wilson and JohnBarnett; in Henry County Benjamin Jones and Patrick H. Fontaine; inPatrick County Greenville Penn and Charles Foster.
