John Snowdon

After immigrating in 1818 to America, settled in Brownsville,Pennsylvania, with wife Mary and two daughters, Ann and Elizabeth.Established a blacksmith shop or foundry of his own in Brownsville,but when the steam engine came into prominence, he worked on those.The original mile posts of the National Pike were cast in his foundry. He made one of the first stoves in America and helped to build one ofthe first iron bridges west of the Allegeny Mountains. Four morechildren were born in America to John and Mary: Samuel S., Elizabeth,John Nelson and Margaret. John contributed greatly to the building ofBrowsville, PA and was a mason, a churchman and an old line Whig inpolitics.
